1. 'Ceramides' and Skin Health * Skin Structure - The skin is composed of the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat. The epidermis, the outermost layer, serves to protect against external stimuli, pathogen invasion, regulate body temperature, and maintain moisture and lipid balance. - The outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, is associated with skin burns, aging, and moisturization. - Ceramides are lipid components located in the stratum corneum and make up approximately 40% of the skin's lipid components.
